Jason leaves for Kazakhstan

I have 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. All are 'adults' now. Typical of a grandparent, I intend to talk about them from time to time. Tonight I'm thinking of Jason. Jason graduated from Eastern New Mexico University (Portales, New Mexico) in May of this year and spent much of the summer at a camp near Rolla, Missouri working as a camp photographer and counselor. Tomorrow he is leaving Washington DC for Kazakhstan as a Peace Corps volunteer. His training will be taking place in the city of Almaty and we are not sure where he will be after that. Jason is a theater major but will be teaching English as a second language. We are very proud of Jason and wish him well on this exciting adventure. Exposure to other countries and cultures will certainly be beneficial as he takes his place on this ever shrinking planet will all call home. Best of luck Jason! We love you.

Here is an e-mail we received from Jason today (August 25, 2007)

Here and settling. Not a bunch of time but here are the pertinents:

Don't have to worry about me suffering over here. Hotel we stayed at is called Tabagan. Google it. Its this ski resort/extreme sports complex. Enjoyed a russian rock concert and skateboard exhibition yesterday.

Met my host family today. They have dial up internet, an indoor bathroom with a western toilet, shower, and washing machine or dryer (I dunno which) so I'm one of the lucky ones. Mama is very nice, though all I can do most times is shrug and smile when she starts asking me things, but she has a 17 year son who has a litte english and a 19 year daughter who has quite a bit so I think we'll get by. again, very lucky -- some volunteers have families with no english at all, and I've had exactly one Kazakh and two Russian lessons.

74 of us Kaz-19s, which means we're the 19th generation of PCVs in Kazakhstan. Much bigger class than I thought it would be but I've made some friends. Said goodbye to all of them today, but will see them again soon.

Anyway, I want to go be social (or, sit around and smile and try to catch a word or two of the conversation at least).

Love!
